I am still pushing toward my goal of 100 wpm by the end of 2024, I started this goal in August, so read that post first to check out my 1 month progress.
Have I improved on my weaknesses?
The weakness I talked about 2 months ago was a slow/weak left hand. My left hand has become stronger and quicker, but it is not nearly as adroit as my right hand. The Dvorak method focuses mostly on the right hand, so this fits with my typing ability, however I do have one hang up about the Dvorak layout. The letter ‘e’ is on the left hand side of the Dvorak keyboard, this is the most common letter typed and if you are creating a keyboard that can type fast, it needs to be on the right hand. I have debated switching over to learning the Colemak keyboard just for this alone. But I’m this far in so it wouldn’t be worth it to switch, I stick to strengthening my nondominant hand.
I continued to do the finger exercise warm up that I created before typing each day, this really felt like a great way to warm up my fingers quickly, I would highly recommend this even though it seems like an annoyance at first (if you want to learn it, check out my first post).
I began typing the book Alice in Wonderland on keybr.com. After typing through hundreds of tests with random words I needed a change and I would recommend this. I enjoy practicing this way more than the random assortment of words because I get to read the book while I type. This is a great feature if you want to try it out, you can also type out The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde or The Call of the Wild. I’m about 14% through the book as of writing this post (around 3700 words in).
Currently my fastest 86.3wpm, I completed this on keybr.com. From when I wrote my first post in September, my fastest typing speed has only improved 4 wpm, I think this is do to the nature of the tests I was taking compared to now.
If you want to check out my profile you can find me here. This website has a ton of awesome statistics it measures from your typing and you can download them too. A really cool feature of this website is it tracks the days you type on a calender, in September I missed 10 days of typing on keybr.com, but in October I only missed one day (of course it was the 13th) and I expect I won’t miss a day throughout November. I can tell my average typing speed has increased throughout this month, I usually average about 75wpm when typing now.
