Road to 100wpm – pt.3 Did I Fail?

2024 has ended and I did not reach my goal of 100wpm, but that is okay! I like to make really impressive goals to work toward and even if I don’t achieve them, I’ve walked the path toward them and bettered myself from it. Don’t get me wrong, it still feels bad to not achieve this, but I am very proud of how much I’ve improved my typing skills in the past 5 months since I began this challenge.

My starting point was 60wpm in August 2024, as of January 2025 after working at this challenge for 5 months I improved to 93.6wpm. That is over 50% increase in 5 months, I think that is a huge win!

Downsides and the Alternative

There were very little downsides to completing this goal, each day I gave up about 10 minutes to practice typing (I would type much more than 10 minutes each day from other daily computer tasks, but this was about the average time I would complete intense practice).

The alternative to completing this goal would probably leave me using this time less efficiently. To put it plainly, I’m someone who likes working toward something. I enjoy running, but when I don’t have a race marked on the calendar I inevitably run less. It’s good to give yourself something to work toward with a specific end date to keep you on track working toward it.

What I would Recommend

My recommendation will be simple with various utilization for any goal, use the power of streaks. On the website keybr.com when you create a profile it keeps track of the days you type on a calendar (click on your profile and scroll to the bottom to find the calendar). The goal is to not skip a day, the calendar also shows different levels of color saturation for how close you were to achieving your Daily Goal Typing Time. My best months were October and November, where ironically, I missed the 13th on both. [These are days that I didn’t type in keybr.com (Intensive practice), but I did regular computer work during these days.]

Set Goals

Set goals for yourself, even if you don’t think you can achieve them, it’s better to set the goal and be working toward something than to do nothing. I am incredibly happy with increasing my typing speed to a high of 93.6wpm. On average now I type around 77wpm now which is a huge increase from where I started, and I reached this by giving up about 10 minutes per day. Massive improvement is possible from small but incremental increases toward your goal. Compound your work for the best results.
